The primary goal of cosmetic ear surgery is to harmonize the proportions of the ears with your face and head. Patients with deformed or damaged ears may be experiencing issues with their hearing and emotional distress due to the appearance of their ears. Preparation
It’s essential to understand all of the relevant considerations prior to your surgery. We’ll provide clear instructions before your surgery and evaluate your needs to ensure that you get the best possible outcome. You’ll likely need to avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements, which can increase bleeding. Also, it is recommended to stop smoking a few weeks before surgery.
During The Surgery
Otoplasty is an outpatient operation typically performed under local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia. This choice will depend on the extent of the operation to be performed and the patient’s personal comfort. The entire procedure typically takes about 1 to 3 hours depending on the specifics and complexity of the procedure.
There are different techniques for reshaping, repositioning and resizing the ear in otoplasty. Otoplasty techniques vary based on what kind of correction is needed. Depending on the individual case, one or more of the following surgical techniques may be utilized:
The specific technique your plastic surgeon chooses will determine the location of the incisions and the resulting scars.
Recovery
Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning patients can return home the same day as the surgery to begin their recovery. Otoplasty patients are usually up on their feet after the treatment and able to return to very light normal activity. However, in the case of young children, a hospital stay of one night may be recommended.
After the surgery is complete, a bulky dressing is wrapped around your head to hold the ears in place. This should be kept for a few days to help enhance the molding of the cartilage and the healing of the incisions. Be sure to keep your dressing clean and dry.
Some patients may experience some pain or discomfort following surgery. This can be managed by over-the-counter medication.
Your doctor can give you more information about when — or if — your stitches will be removed. Some stitches dissolve on their own, but others must be removed in the doctor’s office in the weeks after the procedure.
The time required to recover from surgery will vary from patient to patient. In general, patients can expect to return to work in about one week. Children often take a little longer to recover from their surgery.
