Breast Augmentation Procedure Steps
Preparation
To prepare for your upcoming procedure, you will need to follow preoperative instructions from your doctor. You’ll get detailed pre-surgical instructions before your procedure to ensure the best possible outcome from your treatment.
You’ll probably be advised not to eat or drink starting at the night before your procedure. also, it is recommended to stop smoking four to six weeks before the procedure, and avoid taking aspirins, herbals or any other supplements that affect blood coagulation and certain medications that inhibit the formation of inflammation in 2 weeks leading up to breast augmentation surgery.
To ensure the best result, before the surgery, the surgeon should guide you in choosing the right implant size.
During The Surgery
Breast augmentation is usually performed in an outpatient surgical center by a board-certified plastic surgeon.
The procedure usually will be performed under general anesthesia and takes 1-2 hours to complete.
There are three different incision techniques to place the breast implants, and you and your surgeon should discuss options. These incisions include:
- Inframammary incision, beneath the breast
- Trans-axillary incision, in the armpit
- Periareolar incision, in the tissue surrounding your nipples
The choice of incision depends on several factors, such as the amount of enlargement, the patient’s anatomy, the type of implant, and surgeon-patient preference.
The breast implant is inserted into a pocket. To create a pocket, your surgeon will dissect the tissue of your breast from your chest muscles and tissue. The implants will be placed inside these pockets and centered inside your breasts.
Once your implants have been placed, your surgeon closes the incisions with layered sutures, or stitches, in the breast tissue. The incision lines will fade with time.
Recovery
The recovery process after Breast Augmentation is quite simple. Most patients are ready to go back to work or regular activities within 10-14 days after surgery, and healing is typically much faster than with other types of plastic surgeries.
However, you should expect to experience some discomfort during the first 48h after surgery including light bleeding and some pain in surgery stretches.
You may need to wear a surgical bra to help support your breasts during recovery. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen can help relieve discomfort. Your doctor may also prescribe pain medication for you.
After breast augmentation surgery, you’ll need to give your body time to heal. You’ll need to avoid anything strenuous for two weeks at a minimum. Also, you shouldn’t do any heavy lifting for up to six weeks after getting your implants.
It’s recommended you take short, brisk walks to increase blood circulation, but you’ll need to abstain from strenuous exercise for 6 weeks after your procedure.
After surgery, maintain a healthy lifestyle to speed healing. If you smoke cigarettes, quit. Smoking can slow the healing process.
